I'm so sick of hearing that "greedy bankers" caused this little problem.
As usual, any time there is a crisis, the first place you should look for the cause is the government.
Thomas Sowell wrote about this more than once. Here is a link to one of his articles. I'm sure you can find more if you are interested.
Here is another article from City Journal.
Of course governments can't do this alone. It requires individuals as well. Individuals that banks wouldn't make loans to if the government weren't pushing them to.
Another example of a "crisis" that was created by government which only the government can "solve".
Remember the words of Rahm Emanuel: "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste."
Especially one of your own making.

The thing that the Dems overlooked in forcing the banks to make loans based on ethnicity is that loans have to be paid back. That part of the equation eluded them.
Does anyone really think that "greedy" bankers would make loans to people that have a high probability of not paying them back? Where is the greed in that?
Of course if the alternative is to be put out of business, and you are given the chance to bundle the bad loans in with good ones and sell the whole mess to someone else, then why not?
